FPI Resources and Suggested Reading on U.S. Defense Spending

November 10, 2011

The future of defense spending hangs in the balance.  With a Thanksgiving 2011 deadline looming, the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction -- a bipartisan “super committee” of lawmakers created by the August 2011 Budget Control Act -- is racing to finish negotiations for a bill that would trim America’s federal deficit by more than $1.2 trillion over the next 10 years.  If Congress fails to pass such legislation before January 12, 2012, then over the next decade the Pentagon’s budget, which was already cut by $450 billion by the Budget Control Act, will be further slashed by as much as $600 billion more.

Ahead of this troubling potential scenario, the Foreign Policy Initiative (FPI) is continuing to monitor statements from government and military officials, as well as defense experts, regarding the grave consequences of these cuts to our national security.  We believe that the following recent congressional hearings, speeches, analyses, op-eds, and blog posts may be helpful in compelling policymakers to avert this devastating outcome.  For more resources related to defense spending, visit FPI’s website.
